Each year, the CVSA (Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance) puts on a few safety blitzes across the country. We have one coming up on May 16th through May 18th. At each of these safety blitzes, DOT officers focus on one particular part of safety compliance. This time around, it’s anti-lock braking systems (ABS) and cargo securement.
CHECK YOUR BRAKES
We’ve seen a lot of trucks come through inspection violations with outdated brake systems or too much wear and tear. It’s a huge hazard on the road and it’s something the FMCSA really cracks down on. Well, if you’ve been putting off that brake maintenance, now is the time to get the trucks checked before this blitz. Better to spend some money on maintenance than lose a lot of money on load bidding because your safety score shot way up.
CHECK YOUR STRAPS
For cargo securement, the best defense is a good offense. Drivers who check their loads before hook-up and at every stop have a much higher chance of coming through an inspection clean than drivers who step on the gas and hope for the best. This may seem like a no-brainer, but when a blitz is happening it makes sense to double and triple-check everything.
