Every year, the CVSA (Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance) schedules a handful of nationwide safety blitzes. These all have different focuses. Be aware of each one and get it on your calendar. The last thing you want is to be Out of Service for something you could have fixed pre-trip.

MAY 14-16: INTERNATIONAL ROADCHECK

This takes place in Canada, the US, and Mexico. The event blurb boasts that about 15 trucks are inspected every minute during this 72-hour marathon. Since there is no specific focus of this event, check everything before and during your trip. You will likely be one of the trucks pulled in for inspection.

JULY 7-13: OPERATION SAFE DRIVER WEEK

This focuses on driver behavior. Now, officers will typically use observed driver behavior as an excuse to pull over a truck and do a roadside inspection. So you’re not off the hook for things like equipment problems and HOS tomfoolery. Just watch your speed and stay out of that passing lane. You should be fine so long as you are driving like a granny this week.

AUGUST 25-31: BRAKE SAFETY WEEK

It’s right there in the name. Expect tons of inspections this week, and most of them focusing on brake systems. But don’t shirk on other equipment issues. Check your tires, lights, etc. A small oversight there can lead to an unfortunate violation on your record.

UNANNOUNCED: BRAKE SAFETY DAY

And they won’t announce it. They’ll just spring it on you. Every year, there’s this floating safety blitz that only happens for one day but is never publicly scheduled. The CVSA and DOT want to keep you on your toes with this one. To tell the truth, you should always be a little paranoid about your brakes anyway, right? This just gives you an excuse to take one more look before you pull out of the yard.
